The Discovery of Water Molecules on the Bright Side of the Moon for the first time, NASA announced:
NASA, United
States Space Agency, has explained that it has received convincing
evidence of the occurrence of water
on the moon after implying at a "astonishing new discovery about moon"
several days ago.
The discovery of water will enhance the
Space Agency hopes of building a space station on the moon surface.
The goal is to sustain the base using the moon's natural resources.
The findings are published in two separate research papers in the journal of Nature Astronomy.
There have been signs of water on the surface of the moon in the past, but new discoveries show that it is present here in greater quantities & amount than previously thought.
"This discovery provides more options for possible
sources of water on
the moon," Hina Sgt., A planetary scientist at
Milton Keynes Open University.
The US Space Agency says it will send a man and woman to
the surface of the moon in 2024 to prepare for the "Next
big leap" to land a man on Mars in the 2030s.
He added that where to build a space base on the moon will
depend on where the water is on the moon.
How did the Space Scientists got this water?
Scientists believe that it is trapped inside the particles on the surface, which is why it still exists despite the harsh environment.
In another study, scientists observed areas in perpetual darkness called cold traps. Cold traps can get stuck in the water and last forever.
Scientists found these cold traps on both poles of the moon and concluded that "about 40 thousand Sq.Meters of the surface of the moon is capable of trapping water."
What does this discovery mean?
"This will expand the list of places where we want to build bases," says Dr. Sgt.
There are plans to send several missions to the lunar polar regions in the next few years, but the long-term plan is to build a permanent population on the lunar surface.
Dr. Sergeant says that scientists were already about to send humans back to the moon, but the latest discovery has given them more options as to where they can go to the moon. This makes it a more exciting place to go to the moon.
Experts say the withdrawal of
this icy water could increase the lunar economy in the future. For example, it
is cheaper to make rocket fuel on the moon, more expensive to send it from the
earth. So when people have to come back from the moon or go somewhere else in
the future, they can use this water to make hydrogen and oxygen, which are
commonly used to make rocket fuel. Therefore, refueling on the moon itself can
reduce the cost of space travel and make the space base on the moon more
sustainable in future.
These new discoveries was made at the Sofia
Telescope Observatory. The observatory is a Boeing 747 air craft that flies
99.9 % above the Earth's surface. This infrared telescope can observe the
blackout of the solar system because it is above the atmosphere of the earth.
By observing the reflection and reflection of infrared rays on the surface of
the moon, scientists can govern what exactly is reflecting this light.
Different substances appear in different colors, and in this case, scientists
found exactly the same color that identifies water molecules.
